Homework is set for 30 - 40 mins each night from Monday - Thursday. (This is the school policy set by the Board of Trustees).
Homework is checked at least weekly but typically on Friday.
Most homework tasks are marked by the student. Some receive verbal feedback only. Some is marked more explicitly by me.
Homework diaries are filled out (almost) everyday and signed by me. They should also be signed by a parent each night.
If students are unable to do 30-40 mins then a parent needs to write a brief message in the diary to let me know.
Students who do not do homework are either asked to complete it at interval or lunch time.
Extra
I am reluctant to assign extra homework for those who ask for it for two reasons:
This often comes with the expectation that I will do additional marking - this increases my work load and draws me away from marking other work.
It is important for kids to drive their own learning and they are capable of accessing their own learning tasks (see Learning Links for examples).
Having said the above if students want to do additional homework I always encourage silent reading, watching the news, some physical exercise and conversations with parents about what they are learning as good ways to begin. Do not allow students to over do it though. Down time and just being kids is still very important at this age.
